Hankook brings racing innovation to Formula E Season 11 opener in São Paulo
- Season 11 kicks off at Anhembi Sambadrome circuit in São Paulo
- GEN3 Evo iON Race features a sustainable grip-enhancing compound
- High-performance iON evo AS expands presence in the Latin American EV market
Seoul, Korea, December 4, 2024 — Preparations for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Season 11 opener are underway, with Hankook set to showcase the capabilities of its electric racing technology at the Anhembi Sambadrome in Brazil and on São Paulo's challenging street circuit. The recent pre-season test in Madrid demonstrated the GEN3 Evo cars' performance with Hankook's next-generation iON Race, with teams and drivers completing extensive running across six test sessions at the Jarama Circuit. Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans set the fastest lap time during the final session, with Porsche-powered teams posting strong performances throughout the week.
The GEN3 Evo marks a significant step forward in Formula E technology, featuring four-wheel drive and increased power output. These advancements required comprehensive tire development to match the enhanced vehicle capabilities. "The new Season 11 tire delivers higher peak performance compared to its predecessor. The softer compound allows for more aggressive corner entry, particularly in corners where drivers need to brake and turn simultaneously, which adds a dynamic dimension to our racing strategy," says Team DS PENSKE driver Maximilian Günther.
Season 11 introduces the modified GEN3 Evo iON Race, designed for both durability and better grip. The new design achieves a 10% improvement in grip and allows cars a speed improvement of 1.5 seconds per lap. The tire uses specially engineered fiber materials that resist heat and maintain stability, combined with natural rubber, for long-lasting performance. This new compound demonstrates Hankook's commitment to sustainability, with 35% of materials coming from sustainable sources.
The Southeast Brazilian circuit, winding through the historic Anhembi Sambadrome where thousands gather annually for carnival celebrations, presents unique challenges. "From a tire manufacturer's perspective, this track provides an optimal environment with its varied conditions," says Jiwoong Choi, Hankook Formula E Tire Project Manager. "The combination of curved track sections, surface variations, and temperature changes creates an excellent proving ground for tire performance." This venue, with its mix of high-speed straights and technical corners, provides an ideal testing ground for the thermal management and grip capabilities of the new compound.
These racing developments are reflected in Hankook's consumer electric vehicle products, with the iON evo AS serving as a flagship model for the Latin American market. Engineered specifically for EVs, the iON evo AS incorporates racing-derived elements to address the distinct challenges of electric mobility. The design features optimized pressure distribution to handle increased vehicle weight and advanced noise reduction technology essential for electric vehicles. The iON evo AS represents Hankook's commitment to electric vehicle tire technology in Latin America.
The rigorous testing regime in São Paulo will showcase Hankook's latest developments across various conditions. With São Paulo's summer temperatures varying significantly between morning practice sessions and afternoon racing, the tires must consistently deliver exceptional performance consistency. Visitors can explore these innovations at the circuit's technology showcase during the race weekend.
